Adam Sandler delivers another box office hit with his updated rendition of “It’s a
Wonderful Life.” Set in modern times, we have your typical workaholic father who is
destined to make sure that he can provide for his family all of the things he missed
out on as a child, giving him the life he feels his family deserves. He works for a boss
who is all about self-indulgence and keeps promising him a partnership in the design
firm if he keeps slaving away while he, himself, runs around with various women.
Adam Sandler plays Michael Newman, a wonderful, loving family man who, for all
intents and purposes, has the perfect family. One day Michael walks into “Bed, Bath
and Beyond” and walks through the door that says “Beyond” where he finds Morty
(Christopher Walken) who has a remote control with the ability to fast forward time,
skip back, and pause life itself. Things get out of control when Michael believes this
ability is the perfect way to control anything in his life that he finds stressful,
annoying or unsatisfying. Once the “click” addiction takes hold, he innocently just
wants to start skipping to all the best parts of his life. Things go south when he
makes one bad decision that will change things forever.

My feelings about this movie are totally mixed. There are so many sexual jokes in this
movie that you feel bad for all of the kids who are watching. There are continuous
references to a dog that satisfies himself on a stuffed animal the entire movie, as well
as references to sex and sexual content between Michael and his wife, along with
sexual references concerning Adam’s boss, played by David Hasselhoff. Once you
get calloused to the filth, I think you can enjoy the movie however the calloused part
is my biggest concern. The Lord knows that I am the last person alive to point
fingers, because I personally have a tendency to ride the line a bit too close to the
edge, for the sake of getting a laugh, but when kids see this on a level of this nature,
it is a cause for concern. It also really makes me rethink my own display of humor.

What I LOVED about the movie is that this movie has one of the best displays of a
family life that I have seen in a very long time. You have a wonderful husband
(Adam Sandler) and an incredibly supportive wife (Kate Bekinsdale) and two children
who love their parents with every beat in their hearts. The family values in this movie
are just incredible (except for the filth). It is such a rare occasion where you see a
father who is not a JERK in a movie. Adam Sandler is clearly a loving, thoughtful and
caring husband who cares deeply for his family. He doesn’t stumble his way through
the movie, but instead shows true leadership and respect for everyone.

Although it has a great message about the importance of family and values, that is
overshadowed by a very raunchy comedic background. There was absolutely no
reason to have as much raunchiness in the movie as they did, and in my opinion it
took away from its own message and purpose. On one hand you have a movie that
is promoting family values and on the other you are tearing them down.

The plot was very good and the acting by Adam Sandler was great.  He plays a
similar role to Spanglish, in that he drops the retarded humor for a more
serious role. In fact, all of the acting in the movie is great and I give special kudos to
David Hasselhoff, who seems to me to have the potential for making a comeback.

I give this movie 2.5 of 4 stars because I do think that the movie could have been
better, longer and more effective if they decided what they wanted - a comedy or a
serious family value movie. Sadly, it’s very hard to do both nowadays.

Parental Warning:  There is so much filthy humor in this movie - many references to
strip clubs, two women, sex between husband and wife, a friend who sleeps with
everyone in town, adultery, the list goes on. The dog part is actually pretty
funny, but the fact that they do it so often WILL make your kids start to ask
questions.
This movie is NOT for kids, however adults may actually want to see this movie
because it does have such an awesome display of family values and I can actually
see a husband and wife learning something from this movie.
