The story is about family advise-columnist, Dan Burns (Steve Carell), who has been widowed for 3 years. Suffering from the loss of his wife he faces the challenge of raising his 3 rebellious young daughters. As Dan packs up his ever complaining girls and heads off to the annual family get-away cabin, he has no idea the changes his life will soon encounter. At the local book store he meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) and its love at first sight. As he returns home and begins to share his feelings with family members toward his new found love, brother-Mitch arrives with Marie in tow and proudly introduces her as his new girl friend.
As the week end progresses Dan and Marie try to cover up their growing affections toward each other from the rest of the meddlesome family members which only leads to one comical event after another.
Warning to Parents
This film is rated “PG” which is for some innuendo. There is also a scene where Dan Burns (while fully dressed) hid in the shower to avoid being seen by his daughter who came in the bathroom to talk to Marie. To cover up his presence, Marie undresses and gets in the shower with Dan and although obvious Marie was undressed, only her upper shoulders were visible to the camera. This is a light hearted film that is sure make you laugh at the antics of this dysfunctional family.
