Failure to Launch is one of those movies that you can't help but love, even though it is your
standard run of the mill, romantic comedy. Although the movie is predictable, the movie
gives the audience exactly what it is looking for. A fun movie, strong script, good dialogue,
great chemistry, and a romantic feeling.
Matthew McConaughey plays the 35 year old, well intentioned son who lives at home with his
parents (Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates). He has a good job, he loves his family and
enjoys the luxury of not having to do very much for himself. He is not a slacker but just
more or less the kind hearted guy that does not want to move out and is oblivious to the fact
that his parents need their space. In a sense, he is the king of his own private little castle.
However there is a rebellion in the midst. His parents are plotting to get rid of him by hiring a
beautiful consultant who specializes in just these kind of problems (Sarah Jessica Parker).
As you would expect, the Sarah and Matthew fall in love and the betrayal is eventually
uncovered.
Aside from the strong chemistry between the two, what really makes this movie stand out is
the incredibly funny dialogue from the sidekick friends of both of the leads characters. The
supporting cast is just awesome and the quirkiness they bring to the movie is one of the best
in recent romantic comedy memory. I was very surprised that I liked this movie as much as I
did, given that its predictability. But on the other hand, sometimes we go to romantic
comedies because we do in fact know exactly what to expect. A fun, romantic movie with a
cute and happy ending. Another incredily funny aspect of the movie, is that they are not
afaid to mix a bit of slapstick just for the sake of making the audiance laugh. Pay special
attention to Sarah Jessic Parker's roommate who almost single handedly steals the whole
movie with her "24"'s "Cloesque" personality.
With that being said I personally would have rated this movie R-Rated because of the sexual
content, abundance of sexual jokes and for harsh language. It is pretty amazing of what
they can get away with now days and given the amount of jokes that this movie has, I am
again surprised at the rating. Date Movie and Failure to Launch have both set a new
precedent in PG-13 movies, and sadly are both targeted toward teens.
This movie is the first I have seen that actually show an aging Sarah Jessica Parker and
Matthew McConaughy. Finally their wrinkles are evident and their dyed hair is as clear as
ever. Or maybe I am just getting old at my ripe age of 31.
I recommend this movie to adults only and even with that being said, know that there are a
lot of sexual jokes and one scene of under the covers sex.
Warning to Parents: Not for Kids and Not for Teens. Lots of bad language and TONS of
sexual jokes and one scene of sex.
