Gridiron Gang
3.5 of 4 Stars

The Gridiron Gang is an iron clad sports drama that more than delivers one of the best inner city sports
movies in recent memory.  I would have to even compare this movie to the ever great Remember the Titans
which in my opinion stood tall amongst all other sports movies.

The Gridiron Gang is the true story of teenage prison councilor who realizes that detention center that he
works at offers nothing more than a revolving door for repeat offenders.  He has a vision to help instill
values, character and the sense of accomplishment in each and every person who is works with.  Struggling
against the opposition of the social norms and even those who appear to be his counterparts, he sets out on
this incredible journey for self discovery and a mission discover the best in a group of kids that society has
given up on.  Eventually through the persistence and personal determination a football team is devised and
The Rock must lead this team to personal victory.

This incredible true story was amazingly acted by non other than “The Rock” (Dwayne Johnson).  I know that
you are now thinking, “The Rock”?   However I assure you, he does a great job in this movie and he leaves
behind all of his action movies to tackle the role of a football coach, mentor and friend.  I have read many of
the pre-reviews of this movie and they all seem to have one thing in common.  They hate the movie because
it is overly “Preachy”.  I mean come on, since when is preachy over done in movies.  In fact most movies now
days focus so much on immorality that the word preachy rarely exists.  Yes, the movie is certainly an IN
YOUR FACE character study of inner city life and explores the reasons why gang kids are who they are.
However what I loved about the movie was that they did not blame white people, parents or society as a
whole, but they focused in on personal responsibility.  Something that is completely and totally unpolitically
correct in today’s politically correct way of living.

A few other things I really enjoyed about the movie was that they really showed that the way to move past
hardships in life, is through “forgiveness”.  Toward the end of the movie there was an amazing scene where
two grown men were crying and letting the hatred turn to forgiveness.   Another aspect of the movie was that
they went out of their way to show Christians in a VERY positive light, facing a decision to show mercy
instead of judgment.

When all was said and done, this Football-Prison-Gang movie turned out to be one of the best movies about
character and accountability that I have ever seen in a Hollywood production.  Yes the movie is preachy, but
everything is necessary.  I grew up in Los Angeles and we saw the Crips and Bloods who are the central
characters in this movie.  We saw the damage they left behind but we also saw the loyalty they portrayed to
one another.  It was a complete and total vicious circle of deception and delusion.

Please be aware that there is a TON of foul language in this movie.  NO it’s not R-rated however; the bad
language that takes place is all “Inner City”.  I was not offended because that is exactly how things are said
on the street.  Its intention was not meant to be offensive but meant to be realistic.  Because of that I would
have to say that no one under 13 should see this movie, however everyone over SHOULD.  I think you and
your families can walk away from this movie understanding more about accountability and character.

This movie also had its fair share of violence and sometimes shocking, however ever bloody.

Warning to Parents:  About 200 bad words and some violence.  See above for description about the
language.
