| The Guardian is kind of like going back in time and watching one of those good old pro-military movies of the 40’s. The movie is all about character, courage and commitment. The Guardian is the story about the United States Coast Guard and how important they are to society as a whole. Kevin Costner, in one of his best acting roles yet, plays the best deep sea rescue diver that the Coast Guard has ever seen. One day, while on a rescue, his best friend dies before his eyes and the helicopter accompanying him explodes. This leads to his eventual short term retirement from active duty and opens up the doors for him to become an instructor. He brings his first hand knowledge of the water and rescue to the new enrollees and challenges them to go farther than they thought imaginable. While on this mission to bring out the best of the best, he comes across a student who reminds him of himself (Ashton Kutcher). He is not only the best at breaking every Coast Guard record, but he is also the best at being unruly. What happens next you won’t want to miss. The Guardian is a very well acted movie that really plays on the emotional and physical commitment that those who are serving in the Coast Guard have to endure. At times it will remind you more of a recruitment film than a big budget movie, but nonetheless it’s very well done and enjoyable. Ashton Kutcher is a wee bit annoying to watch but he does a good job in the role he is given. Kevin Costner is the real stand out character in this movie. He shows that his acting career is far from over and that he has some old tricks up his sleeve to revive his career. The movie really weakened with the introduction of the relationship with Costner’s estranged wife. This was kind of just tossed into the movie to buy time in-between action scenes and training sessions. It really was just pretty dumb and badly written, as was the ending. It was out of left field and will annoy just about anyone watching the movie, however it’s still a pretty intense and gripping last 10 minutes. This movie could almost have been PG if it did not toss in the one F Bomb that appears totally and completely out of character for the person using the word. It was kind of slurred and just didn’t fit the scene. I still have no clue why they feel the need to toss a word in, just so they can get a PG-13 rating. Maybe it’s because they’ll sell more tickets with a harder rating. This movie did have a mild innuendo scene which involved two people in the morning chatting in bed who clearly had spent the night with one another. There is some very mild discussion involved but nothing too over the top. I have seen much worse in PG movies. Other than that, the movie is totally clean and a good flick. I would recommend this movie for anyone 10 and above, however depending on your child’s maturity level, you may want to stick to the 13 it recommends. Parental Warning: LOTS of great role models and characters |
