| Movie: Hollywoodland 3 of 4 Stars for Movie Script 3.5 for Everything Else Rated R for Sexual Dialogue, Language, Mild Violence and Brief Sex Scene (No Nudity) |
| Finally we have our first Oscar contender with the gumshoe mystery, Hollywoodland. No, I do not believe this movie will be nominated at all for Best Picture or Best Director, because it is not worthy of such praise, however Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction and Best Costume, will certainly not be missed when it comes time to nominate the best of the year. Hollywoodland is a brilliantly acted and curious drama about the death and suspicion surrounding the suicide of real life actor George Reeves. George Reeves was the star of the mega hit TV series, Superman in the 50s. He was found shot to death at his home, but because of a shoddy police investigation there was much left to wonder about. This story chronicles a sleazy gumshoe detective who will do anything for a buck, but when the tension rises against the potential implication of MGM studios, he begins a relentless pursuit for the truth behind the suicide. This movie was absolutely amazingly filmed, the set design and cars were incredible and the acting was by for the best acting we have seen all year long. The two best actors by far are Adrian Brody who plays the detective and Diane Lane who plays the love interest of George Reeves. Ben Affleck who actually plays George Reeves was wonderful as well. This was a very impressive movie that only suffered from a script that went on too long and from some unnecessary sexual dialogue. While watching this movie, the word that came to mind was “intriguing”. I was truly captivated by the whole story behind the “Man of Steel”, but I could not help but once again, we see a movie that easily could have been PG-13, turned into an adult movie. This movie had quite a bit of sexual comments and one scene that was so totally unnecessary. This would have been perfect if it had less crudity and more tact. Nonetheless I did really enjoy the movie and I will have to say that I would nominate this movie for many Academy Awards with the exception of Best Picture and Best Director. Much Kudos for Acting! 3 Stars for the Movie 3.5 for Everything Else Warning to Parents: Sexual Dialogue, Some Language, Mild Violence and One Brief Sex Scene without Nudity. I would say that this movie is fine for adults because the crude dialogue is few and far between and the sex scene is so brief and there is no nudity. However for the more conservative of adults, I would steer clear of this one. |
