The Inside Man
3.5 of 4 Stars
Rated: R for Language and Some Violence
The movie studios are prepping for the Summer blockbusters, testing the waters with a
gripping heist drama brought to us by none other than the often political director Spike Lee.
Thankfully this time around Spike leaves his personal views at the door and directs an
incredibly engaging movie about a man (Clive Owen)who has supposedly planned the
perfect bank robbery and supposedly has the ultimate plan to escape. After the bank
robbery is under way, Denzel Washington who plays a hostage negotiator is called to the
scene of the crime to make sure that things do not get messy and that lives are not lost.
Things begin to heat up when we discover that Jodie Foster is called by one of her clients to
get into the bank and negotiate money in exchange for valuables that are inside one of the
safety deposit boxes. Madness and Mayhem spin whirlwinds around Denzel as he tries to
make sense of everything that is going on, all while trying to do his job.
Spike Lee directs this movie almost to perfection and keeps the political undertones very
mellow and tries to balance out the issues or racism and corporate curroption. He walks the
fine line and in the end pleases everyone. The Inside Man in my opinion, is one of Spike's
best films, because he brings together culmination of 3 main characters in an incredibly
complex yet simplistic solution. Unlike most heist movies, this one focuses less on the
robbery but more
about the every single detail not having to do with the robbery. To the shock of my friend
next to me, I guessed what was inside the safety deposit box within in the first 5 minutes
however the mystery was still engaging. Without saying too much more, just know that this is
an excellent movie that will keep you guessing until the end.
I have heard some people complain about the running time of the movie, but personally I
love it when movies seem like they are about to end, but then sneak in about 30 more
minutes of plot, twist and engagement. This movie is edited, directed and acted incredibly
well. Denzel Washington is to his perfect best, Clive Owen is proving to be one of the best
actors in Hollywood and Jodie Foster only gets better and better with age.
Warning to Parents: This movie has some violence and tons of bad language. The F word
seems to be the word of choice and the vulgarity includes only the worst one can imagine.
I give this movie 3.5 of 4 stars
