Directed by Sean Penn and based on a true story taken from Jon Krakauer’s best-seller, “Into the Wild”.
The story takes place in 1992 as Christopher McCandless played by rising new star (Emile Hirsch), graduates from college, rebels against the up-scaled college path his dysfunctional parents (William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden), have in mind for him and escapes his life style to become a modern day hippie in search of a free life in the wilderness. Chris’s sister, Carine (Jena Malone), narrates much of the story.
Determined to make it to Alaska on his own, Chris’s charismatic personality wins the affection of those he encounters including a South Dakota farmer (Vince Vaughn), a snow birding ex- hippie couple (Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker) and an x-army retiree who becomes his surrogate father (Hal Holbrook).
I have a friend whose son grew up with my boys and followed this same path back in 1989 and to this day is still a recluse living in the mountains of Idaho. As I look back at my young friend as he made his escape from home and family, I found myself weaving him into every scene.
I thought the story was well directed and entertaining and can see it would invite conversation over coffee at Starbucks. There was some language but seemed to flow with the situations. Also some full frontal nudity both of Chris floating down the river on his back, a drive by of a nudist colony and some in depth looks at the upper region of some females encountered on his journey.
Warning to Parents:
Not a good flick for younger movie goers. Some violence, language, nudity and sexual content. Oh yeah, and a very bloody inhalation of a moose! You’ll have to see the film to figure that one out!
