| OK, I have to admit that I just about split my side laughing all the way through this movie. It started with a great opening and lead to a hysterical conclusion that was reminiscent of Braveheart. Yes, it even had your typical squirrel riding on the back of a wiener dog screaming “Freedom” at the top of his lungs. Open Season is the story of a big bear named Boog, who happens to have been adopted by a sweet and endearing park ranger. Boog lives in the garage of their comfy home and has a full time job helping his owner at the local animal show. In case you’re wondering, let me clarify; no, Boog and the park ranger cannot talk to one another, but their love and caring for one another is very evident. The park ranger for all intents and purposes is Boog’s adopted mother. One day, when sitting in the back of the Jeep, he sees a kindly little deer named Elliot; however Elliot is lying on the front hood of a mean hunter named Shaw. Boog takes pity on Elliot and frees him and movie takes off. It’s all about Boog and Elliot trying to get back to the “Garage,” after the park ranger feels it’s time for Boog to adapt to society. The problem is that hunting season is just 3 days away. Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher are perfect in their roles as Boog and Elliot. I have to say that I am not a huge fan of Ashton, however if there was ever a movie he was born to play, this would be it. Open Season is an absolute riot of a movie and includes lots of joke for both adults and kids alike. Thankfully, unlike movies like “Monster House,” this movie is absent of the dirty jokes, bad language and intense violence. In fact, it’s kind of the antithesis; great morals, 1 mild bad word, and absolutely NO dirty jokes. Yes, there is a little bit of crude humor about farts, and bears pooping in the woods, but even those are carefully done so that kids will NOT go back home repeating what they heard. Personally, I am incredibly careful as a reviewer as to what I recommend for kids, because cartoons, more than most, are what kids tend to talk about and repeat. That is why I can honestly recommend this movie. Open Season is filled with lots of great lessons about forgiveness, compassion, truthfulness and loyalty. Frankly, you might feel the movie is being too preachy, but as you know from my other reviews, I like a movie that preaches. I think that ALL KIDS will love this movie. You can even take the 3 and up crowd. They will love the big, cute and cuddly bear. Parental Warning: 1 bad word said really quickly. The word was “Damn.” Crude humor, however not the sexual kind but more of the little kid kind. Some mild fun violence. The part where kids might get a bit scared is when Shaw is chasing Boog and Elliot; other than that it’s not really scary at all. |
