Movie: The Prestige

3.5 of 4 Stars

Rated PG-13 for Violence and Intensity
The Prestige is one of those movies that is filled with so many plot twists and secrets that I have to be very
careful what I say in my review.  What I will tell you is not a secret and careful constructed.

The Prestige takes place in the last decade of the 19th century and is the story of two rival magicians who
have mastered every trick of the trade and each consumed with outdoing the others skill.  The rivalry
begins when fellow magician played by Christian Bale accidentally kills the wife of Hugh Jackman while
assisting on a trick performed by their employer.  Hugh Jackman is destined on destroying Christian Bale
and also set out on mastering his craft no matter the cost.  As the plot thickens, both Christian Bale and
Hugh Jackman the battle begins as each attempts to take one another out, while trying hard to learn from
one another at the same time.  There are murder attempts, revenge and mayhem around every corner in
this incredibly sophisticated mystery.

Some might be asking if this movie is demonic or satanic because it is dealing with magic.  However that is
not the case whatsoever.  In fact the masterful direction of Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins) actually
purposefully never delves into that area of the industry and focuses on the non-spiritual side of things.

This movie is perfectly cast with both Hugh Jackman (X-Men) and Christian Bale (Batman Begins and Swing
Kids) as the rivals and Michael Caine as the magicians support and mentor.  The only part that seems out
of place is Scarlet Johansson who just seems like she does not fit, nor is her acting in this movie up to par
with her two leads.

I have been told by some that they hated this movie, only because it was too complex, so make sure you
are paying incredibly close attention, so that you do not get lost.  If you do, you will love this movie and be
captivated by the plot, scenery, costume design and acting.  This is a great movie for all above the age of
13, however I think adults will understand the movie better and enjoy it a lot more.

Parental Warning:  There is no sex and only a very subtle reference in the movie.  The movie is rated
PG-13 for violence and intensity and there is plenty of both.
