My Super Ex Girlfriend falls into the genre that I call “No Brainers”. A movie that you are not supposed to think too hard about or over analyze and one that you strictly to watch for the sake of having a lot of fun. My Super Ex Girlfriend is the story of a superhero named G Girl (Uma Thurman) who tries to have a productive relationship. However because of all of the emotional insecurities and lack of ability to control her anger, things begin to go terribly wrong. When her relationship finally comes to an end, she does not just sit on the couch and watch old movies and over eat, she instead resorts to doing what ever she can to torture her ex-boyfriend.
What really makes this movie work, is the incredibly good writing and the snappy one liners. It is a rare thing when you see a movie that has as unique and sharp dialogue, and needless to say, this movie has it all. The acting is downright perfect with Luke Wilson playing the wimpy boyfriend who cares more about feelings than being the ultimate tough guy, and Uma is perfect in the role as the ex girlfriend with some mental issues. One of the best parts of the movie is Vaughn (Rainn Wilson), the best friend of Luke Wilson. He is every sick and twisted sexual male stereotype all wrapped up into one person. Although he is 100% nerd and 100% perv, he is one of the funniest sidekicks we have seen in a while. Be watching for him in more significant roles in upcoming movies.
This movie was absolutely hysterical and I actually looked hard to find problems in it, so I was not forced to give a “no brainer” movie such good kudos, but I really could not find anything. The movie was incredibly funny, good acting, great dialogue and unique storyline. What more can one ask for in a romantic comedy? With that being said, this movie is NOT for kids. My Super Ex-Girlfriend is more like Sex and the City meets Superman. Half of the humor in this movie is toned down sexual dialogue. Although toned down, they do not have any qualms talking about sex. The movie is not overly gratuitous, but nonetheless the filthy humor is everywhere. This movie also has the tendency to treat women more as objects and pieces of meat in some respects; however they do so purposefully, so that people can see the fault in its portrayal. It also touches a lot on how some women are controlling and manipulative, again showing the stereotypes in modern day society. Let’s face it, each person in life has their issues they need to work through but rarely do you see people as bad as these.
Warning to Parents: This movie is NOT for kids and does have a lot of dirty humor, some mild violence and some bad language. It is well deserving of the PG-13 rating and depending on your kids maturity level, I would have to toss my recommendation to the married couples only on this one.
